Homeopathy in Back Injuries

by Elaine Lewis

Who hasn’t injured their back?

OK, you lucky people are dismissed.  I remember one time, for absolutely no reason, I fell over backwards and landed on a michrophone stand, as improbable as that sounds, on the base of my spine, with nothing to break my fall, and let me tell you, the pain was not funny!!!  I was out of commission for over a week, maybe 2 weeks; unable to lift anything or bend forward…if only I had known about homeopathy then, I could have taken Hypericum and moved on!  Yes, homeopathy really is that amazing!  So, what are the remedies for back pain?  Let’s start with…
HYPERICUM (Hyp.)–Spinal injury, even for injections into the spine that result in severe headaches, injury to areas rich in nerves, like the tail bone.  Trauma with nerve pain, sharp shooting pains, numbness, tingling; pains shoot upwards; spinal concussion, temporary paralysis; always give Arnica first to prevent swelling and bruising–ARNICA is our main trauma remedy.  Severe pain, worse touch and pressure; you may have to repeat Hypericum every few minutes depending on the severity of the pain.
NATRUM SULPHURICUM (Nat-sulph.)–Deep spinal aches, stiffness, sore and bruised feeling; worse damp, cold-damp, hot-humid; spinal concussion when Arnica only palliates, the closer the injury is to the head, the more it’s likely to be Nat-s.  Mental and emotional changes after spinal injury, for instance–depression, even suicidal depression; when pain remains after Arnica has been given for swelling.
RUTA–Back injury from twisting (also Rhus tox.)  Lame feeling, weakness in the back since injury.  The person needing Ruta is afraid to do anything, afraid their back will give out.  Stiffness.
CALCAREA FLUORICA (Calc-fluor.)–This is the “chronic” of Ruta.  The lameness and laxness has become a permanent feature of the case; degeneration of the vertebrae since spinal trauma and Ruta only palliates.
MAGNESIA PHOSPHORICA (Mag-phos.)–Acute back spasms, sharp shooting pains, muscle spasms.  We call this remedy “homeopathic asprin”, but the general symptoms must be present, namely: pains that are relieved by heat and aggravated by cold, pains that are better from hard pressure.
BRYONIA (Bryonia)–Sharp pain, slightest motion aggravates, even coughing aggravates.  Irritable.  Acute slipped disc.  Better for lying still and from hard pressure.
BELLIS PERENNIS (Bell-p.)–Deep aches in the spine and injuries to the periosteum (Ruta).  Back injuries from lifting and over-straining.  The gardener’s remedy–achy and stiff.  Deep bruising.  When Arnica has cleared the bruising but a lump remains.  Joint pain caused by being over-heated and then suddenly drinking something ice cold or jumping into cold water.  Injuries to the nerves, intense soreness, injuries to the tail bone.  Remote effects of injuries–in other words, you’re injured here, but the effect is there.  Nerve pains during pregnancy because of pressure exerted by the baby.
RHUS TOXICODENDRON (Rhus tox.)–Achy, sore and bruised pain with stiffness from falls, accidents, over-lifting, twisting, over-doing in general, sitting in a draft and getting chilled.  This is a major arthritis remedy and sciatica remedy when the general symptoms of Rhus t. are present, namely: a great restlessness, can’t get comfortable in any position, so there is constant movement.  Think of this as the exact opposite of Bryonia which doesn’t want to move at all.  Rhus tox can’t stop moving, though first-motion may be painful, continued motion seems to ease the pain and loosen them up. Eventually, though, they will tire and will have to rest, which will begin the restlessness anew.  Next, better from heat, massage and stretching.  Mag-p. and Rhus tox are both better from heat and want it as hot as they can stand it–hot water bottles, showers, hot tubs, hot compresses, etc.  Dampness and coldness will definitely aggravate. They will tell you they know when a storm is coming because their pains get worse or their arthritis acts up.  Worse in rainy weather, cold wet weather, cloudy weather, foggy weather; they’re so sensitive to cold that even touching something cold or drinking or eating something cold can aggravate.
CICUTA (Cicuta)–The worst of all back injuries.  Severe trauma where all the muscles go into convulsions or bizarre contortions.  Convulsions after injury to the spine (Arnica, Hyp., Natrum sulph.), shrieking, jerks, spasms, twitching, arching of the back, head drawn backward.
AESCULUS (Aesculus)–# 1 remedy for all sacro-iliac problems since an injury or a fall.  Achy in lumbar/sacral area.  Pains are worse stooping, rising from stooping or rising from a seat; has to make repeated efforts at getting up.  Ankylosing spondylitis, arthritis, sciatica. Spine rigid, frozen.  Degenerative hip disease.  Walking aggravates.  Spine feels weak and stiff. Back and legs give out.
LYCOPODIUM (Lycopodium)–Chronic low back pain with the concomitant symptom of gas and bloating.  Back injury with gas and bloating.
AGARICUS (Agaricus)–Back injury with extreme sensitivity of the spine to touch.  Twitching.
TELLURIUM (Tell.)–Pain and weak feeling in back.  Very sensitive to pressure and touch; afraid of movement or anyone approaching.  Right-sided sciatica.  Pain worse coughing, sneezing, straining at stool.
TARENTULA HISPANICA (Taren.)–Over-excitability of the nervous system.  Spine is painfully sensitive, touch causes spasms and twitching.  A Taren. person in general is restless, fidgety, and in constant motion eventhough he’s worse for walking.  Pains are violent, painful neuralgias as if a thousand needles were pricking.
**********************************************************
Dosage: If you’ve got a 30C emergency kit (and you should!) give a dose of 30C–which means 1 to 3 pellets dissolved on the tongue.  As soon as you can get a small bottle of spring water, put 1-3 pellets in the water bottle for your next and subsequent doses, shaking the bottle before each dose.  This raises the potency ever so slightly and keeps the case moving.  If this is a severe injury, you may want to repeat the remedy frequently until there’s a sign that the discomfort has been addressed.  If the discomfort isn’t severe, give three times a day.  As soon as there’s a striking improvement, stop the remedy and don’t repeat until there has been a relapse or if no further improvement occurs.  If two days have gone by with no improvement, try a different remedy.  If there’s an aggravation, stop taking the remedy and an improvement may follow after the aggravation has subsided.

Homeopathic treatment for thyroid problems
Homeopathy is one of the most popular holistic systems of medicine. The selection of remedy is based upon the theory of individualization and symptoms similarity by using holistic approach. This is the only way through which a state of complete health can be regained by removing all the sign and symptoms from which the patient is suffering. The aim of homeopathy is not only to treat thyroid problems but to address its underlying cause and individual susceptibility. As far as therapeutic medication is concerned, several remedies are available to treat thyroid problems that can be selected on the basis of cause, sensations and modalities of the complaints.  For individualized remedy selection and treatment, the patient should consult a qualified homeopathic doctor in person. There are following remedies which are helpful in the treatment of thyroid problems:
Iodine – is a great remedy for goiter, simple and the exophthalmic variety; in this we have the exophthalmos, the thyroid enlargement, the tachycardia, and the tremor, all characteristic of iodine, in the simple, soft variety it is also useful.
The general lymphatic glandular involvement throughout the body is an additional indication for iodine. A depressed mental condition is also frequently present.
Spongia Tosta – a remedy long used in treatment of enlarged thyroids. it is also most suitable to the exophthalmic variety. Cardiac tremor is characteristic, in fact the heart symptoms of Spongia are quite similar to those of many cases of grave’s disease.
Lycopus Virginicus – many observers speak highly of this remedy in the exophthalmic variety of goiter. Its chief indication seem to be constriction of chest, weak pulse, which is remittent, tremulous and rapid. Cynosis. Sometimes the heart’s action is tumultuous and forcible.
Thyroidine – produces anemia, emaciation, sweating and a persistent frontal headache and muscular weakness. It exercises a regulating influence over nutrition, growth and development. Tachycardia and exophthalmic goiter with palpitation from least excitement, easy excitability of heart and dry skin.
Sulphur – one of the great remedies for exophthalmic goiter.
Natrum Mur – exophthalmic goiter in subjects of a cachectic appearance; there is palpitation of the heart and the heart beat seems to shake the entire body.
Ferrum met – enlarged thyroid; protruding eyes; palpitation of heart; excessive nervousness; marked debility; frequent tremors with weariness, exhausting sweats.
Ferrum Iod – enlargement of thyroid gland, palpitation of heart and excessive nervousness; running upstairs causes violent beating of heart and pain or top of head; circulation excited, heart seems to force the blood violently through whole body; weakness and bruised sensation in all parts of the body; restless sleep, with frequent waking.
Amyl Nit – great remedy for thyroid symptoms, eyes protruding, staring; fundus as well as conjunctiva injected; frequent flushes of heat in face, oppressed respiration.
Phosphorous – sensation as if the eye were swollen and pshed out of the orbit; palpitation; frequent fainting, sudden syncope, lying as if dead; hands and feet numb, clumsy.

Indications for Medicines

Aconitum nap: Recent and small; also incarcerated, with bilious vomiting and cold sweat; burning as from coals of fire.

Arsenicum album: Tumor dark red or livid, great restlessness, prostration and thirst.

Aurum metallicum: Testes slow in descending. Inguinal and umbilical hernia in children, from crying.

HerniaCalcarea ost: All forms of hernia. Frequently needed by children, especially by fat subjects having tumid abdomen, perspiration on face and neck and cold, wet feet. The two hundredth centesimal potency, given four times a day, works beautifully in children. In youth, a dose every day may be termed frequent. The adult patient should receive a single dose, only, much higher than the two hundredth potency.
x

Carbo veg: Meteorism and flatulence; offensive stools; anxiety, uneasiness.

Cinchona: Strangulated hernia; gut black at operation.

Cocculus Ind: When the protrusion takes place very slowly, as from a paralytic state of the abdominal ring. (Raue.)

Colocynthis: Pain in groin, as from hernia; under pressure, sensation as if hernia receded. Abdomen distended and painful; relieved by hard pressure while bending body forward.

Guaiacum: Pinching in abdomen, receding towards rectum until discharge of flatus occurs. Inguinal hernia.

Ipecacuanha: Inguinal hernia; readily reducible or strangulated. Constant nausea is a sine qua non for this medicine.

Lachesis: Must have clothing loosened; burning, distention, sensation as from the pressure of a stone.

Lycopodium clav: Hernia, right side; crural hernia in women; lacerating, stitching pains; distention of abdomen with rumbling of gas. (Compare with nux moschata.)

Millefolium: Violent colic. Incarcerated hernia.

Muriatic acid: Abdomen distended by little food. Colicky griping. Hernia. The concomitant symptoms are important. Nitric acid. Abdomen distended with flatulence, very tender. Cutting, pinching, worse in the morning in bed. Pain n abdomen when walking; must bend forward. Stinging soreness when touched. Umbilical and inguinal hernia in children and adults.

Nux moschata: Umbilical hernia, especially in children; dry mucous surfaces, abdominal distention and great sleepiness. (Compare with Lyc)

Nux vomica: Sudden violent pain in hernial region; drawing and tearing, and spasmodic constriction in the abdomen, with nausea, vomiting of sour mucus; constipation with ineffectual urging to stool, or, similar to cocculus, slow protrusion in aged persons, with squeezing pain in hernial region, fullness in abdomen, periodical nausea; tumor not very sensitive, is soft and doughy; later come pinching and griping in abdomen, periodical nausea, gulping of salty and bitter water, vomiting, etc. Nux vomica is frequently indicated, especially if errors in diet have preceded.  If it fails, cocculus follows well.  (Raue “Strangulated, umbilical hernia.” Guiding Symptoms.) A very important remedy. I have succeeded with it, even after the occurrence of stercoraceous vomiting.

Opium: Incarcerated, umbilical and inguinal hernias.  Soporous condition, red face, distended abdomen with flatus; anti-peristaltic motion, belching and vomiting, bowels absolutely closed, with urging to stool and urine.

Plumbum:  Strangulated femoral hernia, left side; severe pain, continual vomiting of feculent matter. Strangulated scrotal hernia, right side.

Rhus tox: Hernia caused by heavy straining or lifting. A neglected remedy.

Silica: Hard, hot distended abdomen. Rumbling, shifting or incarcerated flatulence; difficult to discharge with constipation; flatus smelling like wet brass. Painful, inguinal hernia.

Sulphuric acid: Colic, with sensation as if hernia would protrude. Inguinal hernia. Incarcerated hernia in old people, coming on in a very gradual manner; pinched, constricted feeling in hernia; sensation of fullness in abdomen; periodical nausea and constipation; hernia not very sensitive; incarcerated part not very hard or tense, but has a doughy feel ; incarceration may last for days without symptoms growing severe; gradual accumulation of flatus, pinching in abdomen, periodical, transient, tearing pains, constant nausea, belching of sweet, salty or bitter fluid, finally vomiting: hernia on left side; melancholic-phlegmatic temperament. Benninghausen considered this one of the most important remedies in inguinal hernia.

Tabacum:  Strangulated hernia; nausea, deathly faintness, cold; cold sweat; vomiting; sudden cerebral hypersemia. (Guiding Symptoms.) I have never given this medicine in a case of hernia, but an eclectic physician of my acquaintance gave an enema of a decoction of tobacco to a robust, muscular man suffering with strangulated hernia, after taxis had failed and while preparations were making for herniotomy. The  patient then became relaxed to an alarming extent; the doctor had him inverted and held up by the feet. The hernia was then reduced by taxis. The patient recovered. The knife had been cheated. It was allopathic and hazardous practice.  Tabacum would be indicated homoeopathically in the presence of symptoms, occurring naturally, similar to those which the doctor created. Then the potentized medicine would act without producing an aggravation.

Veratrum album: Incarcerated hernia, not inflamed; cough impulse; anti-peristaltic action; great thirst, nausea, hiccough, cold sweat.

Zincum met: Inguinal hernia. Painful pressing in left groin, as if hernia would occur. Jerking in right inguinal region. Drawing pain in left inguinal region while sitting.  Hernia presses downward forcibly.

Homeopathic remedies for dysmenorrhea

Belladonna–Throbbing pains, violent pains, worse on the right side. Sudden onset. Bright red, clotted, hot, profuse bleeding. Congested/full feeling in uterus. Bearing down sensation. Irritable with maddening pains. Better lying down, propped up; thirst for cold water or no thirst at all, desire for lemons or lemonade, worse motion, worse from being jarred, worse light and noise.
Chamomilla–The mentals will be the guiding symptoms here. The person may be hypersensitive and intolerant to pain–very irritable, easily angered and inconsolable. Intense pains extending down inner thighs. The blood may be black with large clots with gushing of bright red blood. The person desires cold drinks, is worse lying down, better cold applications, which is very unusual.
Colocynthis–This one looks a lot like Mag-phos. (see below). There’s a bit more emphasis on the amelioration from hard pressure with this one. There may be an exaggerated “bending double” position; with Mag-phos, the heat is more important than the hard pressure, though Colocynth likes heat as well. Thirsty. Irritable, indignant. Anger aggravates.
Ipecac– When nausea is the prominent feature of the case.
Kali carb– Sharp pains. Cramps felt in the back, extending down to the thighs. Swollen breasts, water retention.
Lac Caninum–Painful swelling of the breasts before the period. Flow in gushes. Pains may alternate from side to side.
Lachesis–PMS-irritable, jealous, depressed, headache, flushes of heat all ameliorated with the onset of the flow. Severe cramps, worse from pressure of the clothing, ameliorated with the onset of the flow. Flow may be black, scanty, lumpy; the less the flow, the more the cramps. Better from open air, cold drinks, talking, worse from sleep, heat, hot drinks.
Magnesia Phosphorica–This is the main one! If you’re not sure what to do, give Mag-phos. This is the typical picture of a woman with her period, doubled up with hot water bottles or a heating pad pressed firmly against her abdomen. The flow is dark. She wants to be nurtured; better hot baths, better pressure, worse lying on the right side. Thirst for cold drinks.
Nux Vomica–Pain in lower back with constant urging to stool. Patient may be chilly and very irritable, impatient and angry. Better rest, lying down, worse pressure–even pressure of clothing. Desire for fats and spicy foods.
Pulsatilla–The menses are easily suppressed, for instance, by getting the feet wet or by bathing. Menses are irregular and the flow is irregular–changeable. The mentals will be a tip off here. The Pulsatilla person is weepy, changeable, shy, dependent, wants nurturing, love, attention; she is thirstless; she craves creamy things–whipped cream, ice cream; she is warm, worse in warm rooms, better in open air, walking slowly in cool crisp weather.
Sabina–Severe cramps extend from low back to pubis; also, pain extends from uterus to thighs. Blood is bright red or bright red mixed with dark clots. Shooting pain up the vagina. Better lying flat on the back with limbs extended.
Secale–Continuous discharge of watery black blood until the next period.
Sepia–Weak uterus, bearing down sensation as if all the organs would fall out, must cross her legs; menses late, scanty, irregular or early and profuse. Violent stitches upward in the vagina. Low sex drive. Patient may be angry, tired, chilly, irritable and over-worked. She may desire sour foods like pickles, but also may desire chocolate. She may be much improved by exercise, worse from cold, better warmth. Fainting from menses.
Veratrum Album–Heavy periods, severe cramps often associated with diarrhea and vomiting. Chilliness with cold sweat, especially on the forehead, and weakness/exhaustion, feels faint; may desire ice water.
Viburnum– Viburnum is Cramp Bark.  Cramps extend to thighs. Bearing down sensation. Severe pains in lower abdomen. Aching in the rectum. Lying down amel., worse movement.  Feel free to use Cramp Bark tincture mixed in water as well, follow directions on the bottle.
How to take your remedy:
Tap one, two or three 30C pellets into the cap of the remedy bottle and pop them into your mouth. Allow them to melt.
If subsequent doses are needed, tap a few pellets into a bottle of water, shake the bottle and take a sip as often as the severity of the condition seems to warrant. However, don’t repeat if you’re improving from the previous dose! Always remember to shake the bottle first.
How often to take the remedy depends on how much or how little you’re improving since the first dose. If at any time there is a striking or noticable improvement, there is no reason to keep taking the remedy unless the improvement stops.
If the improvement is advancing only slowly, a general rule is take the remedy 3 or 4 times a day and as you improve, take less often.
The idea is to take the remedy often enough to ensure a steady improvement, but not so often that you cause an aggravation or accidental antidote. In fact, if at any time you think you’re getting worse, stop the remedy. Again, if the improvement slows down or stops, repeat the dose. In general, if there has been no improvement at all after 3 doses or 6 hours, try another remedy.
If you are helped by one of these remedies but find that the symptoms keep coming back every month just the same, you might want to consider seeing a homeopath for constitutional treatment, which means prescribing for the whole person, so that you can be free of painful menses once and for all.
Regarding potency, you can start with a 30C but don’t be surprised if you actually need a 200C or a 1M to get rid of cramps; you might want to consider ordering these higher potencies online if you don’t live near a homeopathic pharmacy.

Homeopathy for Swine Flu

What is Swine Flu / H1N1 Influenza?

-Dr. Manish Bhatia

Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of influenza in pigs. Swine flu viruses cause high levels of illness and low death rates in pigs. Swine influenza viruses may circulate among swine throughout the year, but most outbreaks occur during the late fall and winter months similar to outbreaks in humans.
The 2009 flu outbreak in humans is due to a new strain of influenza A virus subtype H1N1 that derives in part from human influenza, avian influenza, and two separate strains of swine influenza. The origins of this new strain are unknown. It passes with apparent ease from human to human, an ability attributed to an as-yet unidentified mutation. The strain in most cases causes only mild symptoms and the infected person makes a full recovery without requiring medical attention and without the use of antiviral medicines.
Why is there so much panic about Swine Flu? After all it’s just a flu!
The most significant flu pandemic occurred in 1918/1919. The global mortality rate from the 1918/1919 pandemic is not known, but is estimated at 2.5 to 5% of those who were infected died. With 20% or more of the world population suffering from the disease to some extent, a case-fatality ratio this high would mean that about 0.5-1% or 50 million to 100 million people worldwide were killed. In 1957, an Asian flu pandemic infected some 45 million Americans and killed 70,000. Eleven years later, lasting from1968 to 1969, the Hong Kong flu pandemic afflicted 50 million Americans and caused 33,000 deaths, costing approximately $3.9 billion. In 1976, about 500 soldiers became infected with swine flu over a period of a few weeks.
The scare and panic about the bird flu and swine flu have occurred because people now know what a simple flu can lead to and are afraid of the consequences – not just to the human capital but also to the global financial health.

Swine Flu / H1N1 Influenza Symptoms

The symptoms of swine flu in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Symptoms of Swine flu may include all or some of the following:
  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Lethargy
  • Coughing
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Lack of appetite

Complications Of Swine Influenza

Those at higher risk of catching influenza in general include those with the following:
* Age of 65 years or older
* Chronic health problems (such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease)
* Pregnant women
* Young children
But the past epidemics and pandemics of flu have shown that during pandemics most people who succumb are healthy young adults.

Complications of Swine Flu can include:

* Pneumonia
* Bronchitis
* Sinus infections
* Ear infections
* Death

Transmission of Swine Flu (How does Swine Flu spread?)

As with other flu like illnesses, Swine influenza is spread as follows:
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Kissing
  • Touching infected objects
  • Touching nose, mouth and/or eyes with infected hands
  • Swine flu does not spread by eating pork.

Treatment of Swine Flu / H1N1 Influenza

Swine Flu Vaccination / Swine Flu Shot

The protective ability of influenza vaccines depends primarily on the closeness of the match between the vaccine virus and the epidemic virus, so the presence of non reactive H3N2 SIV variants suggests that current commercial vaccines might not effectively protect pigs from infection with a majority of H3N2 viruses. The current vaccine against the seasonal influenza strain H1N1 is thought unlikely to provide protection. The director of CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases said that the United States’ cases were found to be made up of genetic elements from four different flu viruses—North American swine influenza, North American avian influenza, human influenza A virus subtype H1N1, and swine influenza virus typically found in Asia and Europe.

What You Can Do to Prevent H1N1 Influenza / Swine Flu?

There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy.
* Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
* Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
* Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
* Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
* Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
* If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
Above all. Don’t get stressed by the fear of getting the swine flu. Stress can undermine your immune system. The flu doesn’t kill everyone and in most cases may prove benign. Mild exercise, meditation or yoga and healthy nutritious diet can help keep your immune system in good condition and able to ward of any infections. Not every ‘infection’ becomes a full blown ‘disease’. Most infections are taken care of by your body even before you know that you were infected. Most infections affect gravely those people who are vitally deranged. So instead of panicking about the flu, stay calm and focus on becoming a healthy ‘you’.

Natural Remedy

Homeopathy Remedies for Swine Flu / H1N1 Influenza

Why Homeopathy?
Homeopathy was very successful in dealing with the 1918-19 flu pandemic. Here is a quote from the famous historian Julian Winston:
Perhaps the most recent use of homeopathy in a major epidemic was during the Influenza Pandemic of 1918. The Journal of the American Institute for Homeopathy, May, 1921, had a long article about the use of homeopathy in the flu epidemic. Dr. T A McCann, from Dayton, Ohio, reported that 24,000 cases of flu treated allopathically had a mortality rate of 28.2% while 26,000 cases of flu treated homeopathically had a mortality rate of 1.05%. This last figure was supported by Dean W.A. Pearson of Philadelphia (Hahnemann College) who collected 26,795 cases of flu treated with homeopathy with the above result.
The most common remedy used was Gelsemium, with occasional cases needing Bryonia and Eupatorium reported. Dr. Herbert A. Roberts from Derby, CT, said that 30 physicians in Connecticut responded to his request for data. They reported 6,602 cases with 55 deaths, which is less than 1%. Dr. Roberts was working as a physician on a troop ship during WWI. He had 81 cases of flu on the way over to Europe. He reported, “All recovered and were landed. Every man received homeopathic treatment. One ship lost 31 on the way.”
Homeopathic Remedies
Considering that the Swine Flu virus produces symptoms similar to the human influenza virus, the following homeopathy medicines may prove useful in cases of swine influenza:
#Gelsemium. [Gels]
This remedy corresponds to the commencement of the trouble, when the patient is weak, tired and aches throughout the body. It removes speedily the intense aching and muscular soreness. There is constant chilliness and the patient hugs the fire; the fever is less acute than that of Aconite, and the cough is hard and painful. There are paroxysms of sneezing with excoriating discharge, and great torpor and apathy. Extensive experience with this remedy in the great Epidemic of 1918 proved its usefulness. Simple cases were speedily cured. Aconite will sometimes prove the better remedy for children, but the drug will never be a prominent one in influenza. Still it may be prescribed when indicated; it will, perhaps, soothe and moderate the subsequent attack, but its action is not quick here as in simple fevers, as we have to deal with a blood affection.
#Baptisia.
Influenza with marked gastro-intestinal symptoms may need this remedy, especially when there are putrid diarrhoea stools. Clarke considers this remedy the nearest specific for the disease; he prefers the 30th potency. Hughes also praises it, but uses it in the 1x and 2x dilutions, which seem to have more extensive testimony as to their efficacy.
#Eupatorium perfoliatum.
This remedy has much soreness and aching of the entire body; hoarseness and cough, with great soreness of the larynx and upper respiratory tractCoryza with thirst. Drinking causes vomiting. The cough is a very shattering one, hurts the head and chest, and as in Drosera, the patient holds the chest with the hands. The breakbone pains are characteristic of the remedy. Add to these symptoms acute bilious derangements, and it is all the more indicated. Many physicians rely on this remedy in influenza / flu almost exclusively in the early stages.
#Sabadilla. [Sabad]
Sneezing is the great keynote of this remedy. Sneezing and lachrymation on going into the open air. The throat is swollen and the pain is worse on empty swallowing; the sneezing is excessive, shaking the whole body. Shudderings, with gooseflesh chills creeping upwards, are also prominent symptoms. Frontal headache, dryness of mouth, without thirst and cough, worse on lying down, are additional symptoms. It suits well many cases of the catarrhal form of flu; other remedies having sneezing are Cyclamen and Euphorbia.
#Arsenicum. [Ars]
This remedy covers more phases of flu than perhaps any other remedy. Hughes believes that it will cut short an attack, especially when there is a copious flow, prostration and paroxysmal coryza. Its periodicity makes it suitable to epidemics, and it suits the early symptoms when the affection is in the upper portion of the respiratory tract. The burning dryness and copious watery excoriating secretion and the involvement of the conjunctiva are unmistakable indications. Langour and prostration are prominent symptoms.
#Arsenicum iodide.
Chills, flushes of heat and severe fluent coryza, discharge irritating and corrosive, sneezing and prostration. It corresponds to true influenza and is highly recommended by Hale. Sanguinaria nitrate is especially valuable when the trachea and larynx are affected. Phytolacca is specific when the throat is inflamed and spotty, with great hardness and tenderness of the glands.
#Dulcamara. [Dulc]
This is one of our best remedies in the acute form; the eyes are suffused, the throat is sore and the cough hurts because of the muscular soreness. If brought on by damp, cold changes in the weather, so much the surer is Dulcamara indicated.
#Bryonia.
The trouble here is largely bronchial and going downward. When a person is very grumpy and feels miserable with the flu, wanting only to lie still and be left alone, this remedy is likely to be useful. Headache, muscle aches, and cough or stomach pain may be the major symptoms. Everything feels worse from even the slightest motion. The person’s mouth usually is dry, with a thirst for large cold drinks.
#Phosphorus may be indicated, especially when the trouble moves towards the chest. It is a very useful remedy for the debility following la grippe, as it is usually of the pure nervous type. It is the great post-influenza “tonic.”
#Rhus toxicodendron. [Rhus-t]
Influenza, with severe aching in all the bones, sneezing and coughing. The cough is worse evenings and is caused by a tickling behind the upper part of the sternum. Especially is it useful in cases brought on by exposure to dampness. There is much prostration and depression, and the patient may have some symptoms which are suspicious as pointing towards typhoid fever, such as burning tongue, stupor and delirium. Aching pains and nightly restlessness are keynotes symptoms. Causticum, like both Rhus and Eupatorium, has a tired, sore, bruised sensation all over the body and soreness in the chest when coughing, but it has in addition involuntary urination when coughing.
#Allium cepa. [All-c]
Profuse catarrhal coryza; the nose runs freely, there is sneezing, irritability cough, the face is swollen and looks inflamed. Camphora. This remedy is often sufficient at the outset to cut short an attack, or at least modify the severity.
#Sticta. [Stict]
Nasal catarrh; headache, thirst, nightly expectoration, great watering of eyes, running at nose, hoarseness of voice, frontal headache and depression of whole system. Tuberculous subjects attacked by influenza. “There is no better remedy,” says Dr. Fornias,”for the incessant wearing, racking cough of this class of patients.” Tuberculinum is an excellent prevention of recurring attacks of influenza / flu in those who have annual attacks.
#Ipecac
